Why isn’t website search easier?

I was messing around on Facebook today and accidentally did something that led me to ask the question “why isn’t it already like this?”. Basically while on Facebook, I wanted to do a search for a specific friend. Upon not getting any results, I was confused. I then realized that I had actually searched in my browser’s search box.

It got me thinking, what if this actually worked?

Basically the idea would be that websites could define a single search box to query. Maybe even use a tag of some sort that would either replace “input” or augment it. Then, whenever I go to do a search with the browser’s search box, it also looks to see if the website I’m currently navigating has that tag in the code. If found, it will also query that search box.

If the feature would have been implemented today, my search results may have looked a bit more like this:

Search Wish

Is someone at the W3C listening? Maybe Mozilla? Apple? Opera? Would LOVE to see this feature…
